As Tangier is perched on a cliff you have a unique panorama of its mythical bay. A reason to stroll and then lounge in this particularly mild climate.
Come and savour the charm of Tangier cafés, as did Matisse, Paul Bowles and Samuel Beckett. The magic always works in these mythical spots: Grand Café de Paris, Café de France, El Minzah Hotel, Continental Hotel, each has its own history. The terraces of the famous Hafa café, situated in the upper town and open since 1921, give you a magnificent and soothing view of the Strait of Gibraltar as night falls.
The Tanjazz festival takes place each year from late May to early June. This international event where the foremost jazz performers of the moment are invited for concerts in several venues in the town. Everyone attends the Mediterranean Nights Festival held during July, an occasion to enjoy an eclectic and relaxing musical programme. All year round, Moroccan and classic films fans can use the Film Archive situated on the Grand Socco inside the Rif cinema (previously the Rex built in 1948). There is a wide choice of art galleries. You can stroll from the Gallery Delacroix, housed in the French Cultural Institute, to the Lawrence-Arnott gallery which exposes the works of a selection of the major Moroccan and foreign artists without missing the Volubilis gallery which is specialised in local artists.
The Tangier Royal Golf Club, designed by Cotton and Pennink in 1914, proposes a course, whose highest point dominates the town, which winds through pine, fir and eucalyptus trees. Other sports have a place of honour. You can try sailing, swimming, tennis, horse-riding or even cricket!
A place to stay and a source of inspiration for artists since the 19th century, Tangier is good living personified.
